About astrology
Astrology is a cultural and interpretive tradition with a long history across many societies. Scientific research has not established birth charts or transits as reliable predictors of personality or events. Orbit is for education, entertainment and personal reflection. It does not offer medical, financial, legal or relationship advice.
What it is
A short, structured course in how astrology reads a birth chart, with your own chart as the worked example in every lesson. In astrology, a birth chart is a map of where the Sun, the Moon and the planets were at the time and place of birth; Orbit teaches what the tradition traditionally associates with each part of it.
What it does
- Your birth date, and your birth time if you know it. Without a birth time, Orbit shows no Rising sign and no houses rather than guessing.
- Your birthplace, chosen from a list of places built into the app, or entered as coordinates if it is not listed.
- Learn: 28 short lessons on three paths, Foundations, Planets and Chart reading. Each lesson ends with a check question.
- Chart: your birth chart, drawn on screen, with a list view that works with VoiceOver.
- Today: the current positions of the planets compared with your chart, which astrology calls transits. When Orbit gives the day an attention level, the level is an Orbit teaching convention that counts the day's transits by fixed rules; tapping it shows every rule and weight behind it. On days with no such transit, Orbit sets no level. The level does not describe what will happen.
- Does this resonate?: once a day you can answer with one of three choices. Your answer never changes a calculation.
- Progress: XP, levels and a streak. XP cannot be bought.
Orbit+ is an optional subscription, monthly or annual, that adds more transit explanations each day beyond the free daily allowance, and the Planets and Chart reading lessons; your chart, Today, the Foundations lessons, XP and streak stay free.
Privacy
No account, no server, no advertising or analytics SDK, and no tracking. Your birth details, lesson progress and reflections are stored only on your iPhone and are not included in iCloud or computer backups. Orbit works without an internet connection. The only network traffic is Apple's in-app purchase system, when you view, buy or restore Orbit+.
This describes Orbit as it will be released; it is not yet available.
How positions are calculated
Orbit calculates every position on your iPhone, using its own tables fitted to the DE423 planetary ephemeris from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. It supports birth dates from 1800 to 2199.
